Jayadeva is refers to Kenduvilva as his birthplace in Geetagovinda in the seventh song or geeta in the benedictory final stanza or bhanita thus.
              Kinduvilva samudra sambhaba Rohini ramanena
Obviously Jayadeva loved his village and he refers to himself as having done village Kenduvilva proud, making it well up in joy much as the sea becomes ebullient on seeing the moon. The village has been conclusively identified with modern Kenduli in the Prachi valley, a few kilometres from Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Orissa, the Eastern state of India. Chandradatta in his Jayadeva Charitam refers to the village as being in the region of Puri.

The Prachi is a river of great antiquity and sanctity. The area along the river from Bhubaneswar to Konark and Puri has many ancient monuments. There are numerous temples and images of the four armed Vishnu in his Madhava aspect and it is quite clear that Madhava worship was quite popular in the Prachi valley by the time of Jayadeva. In the very first sloka of his lyrical epic Jayadeva refers to its theme as glorification of the tale of Radha and Madhava. The Prachi valley has also several temples of Shiva and Shakti. Obviously in the early medieval times this was a peaceful and prosperous region and had very good scholarly traditions. It has numerous temples, monasteries, sacred tanks and groves and gardens.

Another major temple in the vicinity is that of Mother Goddess Mangala. This is considered among the major shakti temples of Orissa. More importantly this temple is very intimately interlinked with the ritual of Nava Kalebara or the renewal of the bodies by the presiding deities of the Puri temple.
Kenduli has several ancient monuments, the most prominent of these being the temple of Padmavati with a beautiful granite image of the Goddess of the same name and a temple of Nrisingha. Remains of a monastery known as Trimali matha can be seen not far from the latter. This is associated with the court of Tirumalla Raya of South India and is a branch of the main monastery of the same name at Puri. Padmavati of the village temple was most probably the gramadevati or the pressing deity of the village and Jayadeva was quite devoted to her. This perhaps explains Jayadeva’s use of double entendre in using the name of Padmavati that was also the name of his wife. A museum in the village houses several antique sculptures and artefacts. Recent excavations in the vicinity of the village have confirmed the antiquity of the settlement.

Publication of the critical edition of Vaishnava Leelamrita composed by Madhava Pattanayak in the nineteen seventies has revealed many interesting aspects of the village. The great saint Sri Chaitanya passed by this village every year in his Samkirtana journey from Ekamra Kshetra Bhubaneswar to Srikshetra Puri.
